EU brokers and settlement providers are told to prepare for T+1 in October 2027

On 16 October 2026 the European Securities and Markets Authority said the European Union will switch to T+1 settlement on 11 October 2027, and called on market participants to finish technical preparation and testing. T+1 means the securities settlement cycle moves to one business day after the trade. It is not a description of how a CFD position is closed with a broker.

Key facts

  • ESMA’s call is dated 16 October 2026.
  • The EU settlement switch is stated for 11 October 2027.
  • Allocation and confirmation requirements are stated from 7 December 2026. They are not the same event as the settlement switch.

ESMA says the regulatory framework is ready after publication of the regulatory technical standards and ESMA guidelines on standardised procedures and messaging protocols. The settlement date it states is 11 October 2027. It also says the first deadline is earlier: investment firms and their clients are to comply with new requirements on allocations and confirmations from 7 December 2026.

From that December date, ESMA’s guidelines describe mandatory use of electronic, standardised communication channels and international messaging standards, and machine-readable communication, except during temporary technical disruptions. ESMA’s chair describes the transition as a shared effort by the industry and public authorities, and points readers to the recommendations of the EU T+1 Industry Committee. This briefing does not reprint those recommendations.

The people ESMA addresses are participants in the trading and settlement chain: investment firms, their clients, and the systems that allocate, confirm and settle securities. A broker’s securities desk can be inside that chain. A CFD is a contract with the provider and is not settled on the securities settlement system this announcement describes. Reading the T+1 date across to a CFD financing charge, or to the closure of a CFD, would mix two different operations.

Why it matters for investors and traders

Brokers, custodians and settlement systems that handle EU securities transactions have operational work before the cycle shortens. A client who buys a security and a client who trades a CFD on a price are not in the same settlement process.

Markets discussed: Securities. These are the subjects of the briefing, not a list of markets that moved.

Uncertainties

  • Testing and firm-level readiness are not measured on this page.
  • The industry-committee recommendations are mentioned and not reproduced.
  • Temporary technical disruptions are the exception ESMA allows for machine-readable messaging. What counts as temporary is not defined here.

What to watch next

  • Separate the 7 December 2026 messaging deadline from the 11 October 2027 settlement date.
  • Ask whether a product is a security that will settle in the EU cycle, or a CFD with the provider.
  • Use the firm’s own operational notice for cut-off times. ESMA did not publish a client cut-off in this release.
