Investing basics
Investing is buying an asset you expect to hold while a business, a government or a project does its work. The point is the cash and the claim, not the movement on a screen this afternoon.
Start from the liability
Money you must spend on a known date does not belong in a volatile asset. An emergency reserve and short-term bills come before a market. What is left can take investment risk, and only then does the choice of shares, bonds or funds mean anything.
Ownership and lending
Equities are a residual claim on a company. Bonds and loans are a promise to pay, which can be broken. Funds package either. Mixing the words “safe” and “bond” has misled people through every credit cycle. The issuer and the maturity are the product.
Process beats a ticker
Write down what you own, what it costs to hold, and when you would add or stop adding. That record is more useful than a watchlist. Platforms are a way to implement the record. Country pages on this site exist because the wrapper — ISA, IRA, osakesäästötili, or a plain taxable account — changes the outcome as much as the fund.
