On 21 October 2026 the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation and ValueExchange published research on how Europe’s post-trade systems are placed for the move to T+1 settlement in October 2027. The paper is industry research. It does not change a settlement rule.
Key facts
- The DTCC and ValueExchange release is dated 21 October 2026.
- The research reports a 15 percent rise in European settlement volumes in 2025 and a 21 percent rise in failed trades.
- The paper is industry research. It is not the EU legal timetable.
The press release describes a report titled “Post-Trade Transformation in Europe: Why connected data flows are the key to settlement efficiency.” DTCC says fragmented data and workflows still create inefficiencies, and that T+1 is a moment to automate, standardise and consolidate work. It describes reimagined workflows as a way to cut duplicated middle- and back-office steps, keep one agreed set of trade data, automate settlement instructions and see the path from post-trade into settlement. Those are the report’s recommendations. This page does not test them.
The release states these findings from the research. Settlement volumes across Europe increased 15 percent in 2025, and failed trades increased 21 percent. Only 33 percent of European middle offices have invested in automated storage and exchange of standing settlement instructions. About 68 percent of firms still rely on some manual trade matching. Only 62 percent of firms appear prepared for upcoming PSET requirements. DTCC also says T+1 compresses settlement timelines by approximately 83 percent. Each of those figures is attributed to the research. WiT Markets has not remeasured them.
Val Wotton, managing director and global head of equities solutions at DTCC, is quoted saying the move should be treated as a catalyst for operating-model change, and that many of the capabilities already exist. The release points readers to DTCC’s T+1 research hub for the full report. This briefing does not reproduce the report. The legal timetable for the EU cycle is the separate ESMA announcement of 16 October 2026, which dates the settlement switch at 11 October 2027 and messaging requirements at 7 December 2026.
Why it matters for investors and traders
Brokers, custodians and settlement operators can see which operational gaps the research names before the settlement day shortens. The gaps are about data, matching and instructions. They are not a new statute.
Markets discussed: Securities. These are the subjects of the briefing, not a list of markets that moved.
Uncertainties
- The full report was not copied onto this page. The figures are those in the press release.
- “Appear prepared” for PSET requirements is the research’s wording. The release does not define the test.
- An 83 percent compression is DTCC’s description of the shorter timeline. It is not a measured saving for any named firm.
What to watch next
- Use the ESMA dates for the legal timetable, and this research for the operational findings.
- Treat the percentages as the report’s findings, not as a WiT Markets census.
- A firm’s own cut-off times are not in this release.
