Gold, oil and copper do not share one inflation story

Gold is often discussed against real interest rates and jewellery or investment demand. Oil clears through inventories, production and disruption. Copper follows grids, construction and mine supply. Calling all three an inflation hedge erases the mechanism that would have to do the work.

Key points

  • A common label does not give three commodities the same demand.
  • The vehicle matters: metal in a vault, a futures roll and a producer’s equity are different claims.
  • This note does not quote a spot price. There is no live commodity feed.

What is going on

Inventories, storage and the shape of the futures curve sit between a headline and a fund return. That is already the point of the notes on contango and on spot prices versus investor returns. Gold can be held as a bar, a vaulted claim or a miner’s share. Oil exposure is often a futures position because storing barrels is not what a fund does. Copper adds mine supply, scrap and the investment cycle in grids and buildings. A geopolitical shock that removes energy cargoes need not tighten a copper mine.

Why it matters

Inflation is a rise in a consumer basket. A commodity can rise because its own supply fell, which may add to inflation, or because factories are busy, which is a growth story, or because investors are buying a store of value. Those are different companions for equities and for bonds. The macro note on energy shocks describes one transmission path for fuel. It is a poor template for gold jewellery demand.

What to watch

Name the commodity, the contract or fund, and whether the curve is part of the return. The CME documents the contracts. A fund factsheet has to say whether the holding is metal, futures or shares. This page does not substitute for that factsheet.

Risks

Storage, roll costs and producer operating leverage can make the investment fall while the spot story an investor remembers is rising. Currency of quotation adds a further translation. Nothing here is a ranking of gold, oil or copper.
