What a monthly market report must contain
A monthly report is a dated reading of a named period. This note is the template that reading would have to meet. It is not itself a report on the current month.
Key points
- A monthly report needs a period, an author, sources and more than one scenario.
- This page is the standard. It is not a report for a named month.
- Missing official figures stay missing rather than being estimated for tone.
What is going on
The desk has not published a monthly edition. Publishing one would require an executive summary, the reporting period, an economic backdrop tied to named releases, separate discussions of equities, bonds, commodities and currencies, cross-asset risks, only those catalysts whose dates were checked against an official schedule, alternative scenarios, sources, limitations, a publication date and an author. A layout is not that document.
Why it matters
Readers should be able to tell a framework from a report. The framework can be useful every month because the mechanisms do not expire. The report expires when the period ends and must say so. Treating the framework as “this month’s outlook” would invent a publication the desk does not have.
What to watch
When a monthly report appears, check that each factual sentence has a source and a period, that scenarios have assumptions rather than probabilities, and that the date on the page is the publication date rather than the day the template was designed.
Risks
A template can be mistaken for evidence. It is not evidence. It also cannot prevent a later report from being wrong. The correction policy is the remedy for a published error, not a reason to fill the gap with an undated narrative.
