Precious metals
Palladium trading: catalyst demand and a small market
Palladium’s main industrial use has been petrol-engine catalysts. Supply is concentrated. The traded market is small, so prices can travel a long way on a modest shift in demand or on a disruption.

Market overview
When palladium is expensive relative to platinum, catalyst makers look at switching. That link does not make the two metals one market. Each has its own mine supply and its own contract.
Because the book is thin, a research note that only says precious metals is not evidence a firm offers palladium. This page keeps that distinction.
What tends to move it
Petrol vehicle output
Catalyst demand follows the fleet, not a jewellery cycle.
Substitution
Platinum can take share when the price gap justifies a redesign.
Supply concentration
A small number of regions dominate mine output.
Position size
The contract can move more than the news seems to justify.
Ways to take the exposure
These are different legal positions. A platform may offer one and not the others. Nothing here is available in every country.
Futures
Listed and thin. Delivery rules and size are on the exchange page.
Funds
Scarce. Read the holding before assuming metal exposure.
Mining shares
Usually a mix of platinum-group metals.
CFDs
Only where a firm actually lists the name. Absence of a name in the directory means not confirmed.
Contract specifications

Contract unit, tick and margin are on the exchange page. They are not reprinted here.

What the costs usually are
A wide bid-offer can be the largest cost. Financing on a CFD and the roll on a future are additional and not interchangeable.
What a headline commission leaves out of the bill separates the commission from the spread, financing and other charges.
Risks that belong to this market
Volatility
Small markets reprice in jumps.
Unconfirmed access
A multi-metal CFD list is not a palladium contract until the name appears.
Substitution lag
A chemistry change takes time. The price can move before the demand does.

OpenA thin book is a risk factor
Palladium has, in past cycles, moved far enough that the story became the shortage itself. The useful question is whether you can exit, at what spread, and whether the product you hold is the metal, a future or a company.

Questions
Why might no provider be marked as naming palladium?
The commodities research note names some metals and not others. Palladium is shown only when the note says so. Silence is not support.
Is palladium gold’s volatility with a different label?
No. The demand is industrial and the market is smaller.
