Commodity category
Precious metals: gold, silver, platinum and palladium
Precious metals are mined materials and financial holdings at the same time. Gold carries monetary and jewellery demand. Silver adds industrial use. Platinum and palladium are thinner markets tied to catalysts and concentrated mine supply.

Market overview
Investment demand, jewellery and industry pull on different metals. A rise in real interest rates can weigh on gold even when a mine’s output has not changed. Silver can follow that financial story and still be repriced by electronics and solar demand.
Platinum and palladium are smaller. Automotive catalysts have been their main industrial use, and the two metals can substitute for each other when the price gap is wide. Liquidity is not gold’s liquidity. A wide spread is part of the market, not a footnote.

Real yields and the dollar
Gold is often discussed against real interest rates and the currency used as the unit of account. That is a financial channel, not a jewellery order.
Industrial use
Silver, platinum and palladium have factory demand. A monetary story does not describe a catalyst order book.
Mine supply
New metal does not arrive on a quarterly timetable. Grade, jurisdiction and by-product economics sit behind the headline.
Product choice
Allocated metal, an exchange contract, a fund and a miner’s equity fail in different ways.
Ways to take the exposure
These are different legal positions. A platform may offer one and not the others. Nothing here is available in every country.
Allocated metal
You, or a custodian, hold identified bars. Storage and insurance are the costs. Most brokerage accounts do not offer this.
Futures
An exchange contract with an expiry and margin. CME Group describes COMEX gold futures, symbol GC, as physically settled. Size and tick stay on the specification.
Funds and ETCs
A share or note. Some hold metal. Some hold futures and roll them. The documents decide.
Mining shares
A company, with costs, debt and geology on top of the metal price.
Contract specifications
CME Group
The exchange publishes the contract unit, tick, currency and settlement rule. This page does not copy a size, a tick or a margin, because those figures were not read from the specification table. A broker margin is a separate, variable number. The gold specification page retrieved on 19 October 2026 names the GC contract and describes physical settlement.
Read the exchange pageLondon Metal Exchange
LME lists some precious-metal contracts. A COMEX gold future is not an LME warrant.
Read the exchange pageIllustrative contract value
What the costs usually are
Bullion has a dealing spread plus storage. A futures trade has commission, exchange fees and the roll. A fund has an ongoing charge. A CFD, where it is offered, has a spread and often overnight financing. These are not one number.
What a headline commission leaves out of the bill separates the commission from the spread, financing and other charges.
Risks that belong to this market
Leverage
Futures and CFDs magnify the move and can close a position.
Thin markets
Platinum and palladium can gap. A stop can be skipped when there is no bid.
Custody
An unallocated claim is not a numbered bar. Read who holds the metal.
Compare precious metals providers
The list is the commodities research workbook’s assignment for this group. A firm appears here only when that workbook places it in precious metals. A group assignment is not proof that every market in the group is offered. Firms with no group in the workbook are left out. The order is alphabetical. It is not a ranking, and no commercial relationship is recorded on these rows.
16 of 16 providers assigned to Precious metals in the research workbook. Order is alphabetical. A region filter means the research note mentions that region. It does not confirm you can open an account there.

Calculators
Each tool starts from numbers you type. This page does not send a contract size or a live price into them.
Position size
You type the contract multiplier. This page does not insert one.
OpenFutures margin
Tick value and margin come from the specification you enter.
OpenRisk and reward
A planned payoff. It does not grade the trade.
OpenProfit and loss
A result from prices you type.
OpenStop and target
Distances you choose, not a market order.
OpenTrading journal
A record of trades you enter.
OpenTrading performance
Figures from the journal, not from a feed.
OpenWhat a commission leaves out
How spread, fees and financing sit beside a headline commission.
OpenFour metals, four markets
Treating precious metals as one inflation hedge erases the mechanism. Gold can be held as metal. Silver’s industrial share is large enough that a factory slowdown matters. Platinum and palladium are small enough that a change in catalyst chemistry can dominate a monetary story.
The pages below keep the contract, the fund and the miner apart. No price is published here.
Questions
Is a gold fund the same as owning gold?
Only if the documents say the fund holds metal and on what terms you could receive it. A futures fund’s return includes the roll.
Why is palladium harder to trade than gold?
The market is smaller. Spreads are wider and a modest order can move the price you actually deal.
