Oil was higher in the reports filed on 22 October 2026. The price and the reason are not the same fact. One agency named a barrel price and one set of attacks. Another carried a television report that it had not verified.
Key facts
- Reuters reported Brent at $111.03, up more than 2 percent, and gold at $4,067.5.
- Reuters attributed the oil move to further Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia.
- The Associated Press carried an unverified state-television report of seven damaged tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.
Reuters reported Brent crude up more than 2 percent at $111.03 a barrel, near a five-month high, in its 2:33 a.m. Eastern time dispatch on 22 October 2026. It attributed the rise to further Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia and to the risk of wider conflict and supply disruption. The same dispatch reported gold at $4,067.5 an ounce. Gold and Brent are both in that story. A move in one is not an explanation of the other.
The Associated Press reported that world shares and US futures retreated as oil jumped more than 2 percent, after Iran’s state television said seven oil tankers had caught fire and been damaged in the Strait of Hormuz. AP wrote that the significance of that report depended on verification. WiT Markets has not seen a notice from a port, an insurer or an exchange that confirms the fires, and it does not treat the television report as established.
An inventory figure and a geopolitical claim are different inputs. The reading published on 1 October still explains what a stocks report can and cannot say about a contract. This note does not add an inventory number, because none was in these two stories, and it does not turn the Brent print into a trading instruction.
Why it matters for investors and traders
Energy prices feed into inflation and into the cost of moving goods, but only after the report is identified. A verified price and an unverified incident should not be written as one sentence.

Uncertainties
- The tanker account was unverified in the Associated Press story.
- This page has no exchange settlement price and no inventory figure for the day.
- A CFD or a later contract month can differ from the Brent level named here.
What to watch next
- Look for a shipping or official notice before treating the tanker report as fact.
- The inventory reading remains the guide for a stocks figure, which this story does not contain.
