Briefing
Asia led lower, oil higher, on 22 October

On 22 October 2026 Reuters described a weaker Asian equity session, a higher oil price, and lower US Treasury yields. The figures below are that dispatch. They are not a later quote, and two accounts of the Gulf risk do not say the same thing.
Key facts
- Reuters, at 2:33 a.m. Eastern time on 22 October 2026, reported Asian equity indexes lower and Brent at $111.03.
- Reuters and the Associated Press gave different accounts of the Gulf risk. Neither incident is confirmed on this page.
- The Bank of Korea left its Base Rate at 3.00 percent. That decision is separate from the index percentages.
Reuters filed from Hong Kong at 2:33 a.m. Eastern time. It reported that MSCI’s Asia-Pacific index excluding Japan was down 1.8 percent, at the lowest level in nearly three months, and that the index was heading for a fourth straight weekly decline. In the same story the Nikkei was 2 percent lower, Korean shares were down more than 4 percent, the CSI 300 was down 2 percent, and the Hang Seng was down more than 3 percent. Reuters called the CSI 300 close to a technical bear market. That is Reuters’ description, not a definition adopted here.
The same dispatch reported Brent crude up more than 2 percent at $111.03 a barrel, and attributed that move to further Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia. The Associated Press, in a separate story the same morning, reported that oil jumped after Iran’s state television said seven tankers had been damaged in the Strait of Hormuz, and treated that television report as not yet verified. WiT Markets has not confirmed either incident from a shipping authority or an exchange notice. The two explanations are not combined into one cause.
Reuters also reported the US 10-year yield nearly 6 basis points lower at 5.0857 percent, the 30-year at a one-week low of 5.3850 percent, and the French 10-year yield above 5 percent. The dollar index was 101.57, the euro $1.1242, and the yen 157.55. Gold was $4,067.5 an ounce. Bitcoin was down 2.2 percent at $82,771.05 and ether was down 2.2 percent at $2,436.3. The Bank of Korea’s own release, the same day, left the Base Rate at 3.00 percent. Category notes carry the equity, currency, oil and digital-asset detail. A move in one of those markets is not evidence that it caused the others.
Why it matters for investors and traders
A single session can show equities, oil, bonds, currencies and digital assets moving together in a news report. Reporting the moves is not the same as assigning one cause, and a figure from one dispatch is not a live price.
Markets discussed: Equities, Commodities, Bonds, Forex, Digital assets. These are the subjects of the briefing, not a list of markets that moved.
Uncertainties
- The tanker report carried by the Associated Press was unverified in that story.
- Reuters’ Houthi account is a different claim. This desk has not checked a shipping authority.
- Share, oil and currency levels can change after the dispatch. No later print is shown.
What to watch next
- Read the Bank of Korea decision for the rate, and the category notes for the asset detail.
- Treat any later price as a new source, not as an update of this page.
