The Bank of Korea said on 22 October 2026 that it was leaving the Base Rate unchanged at 3.00 percent. The decision is the Bank’s. Market prices that day are a different document and are not used here as evidence that the hold caused them.

Key facts

  • The Bank of Korea left the Base Rate at 3.00 percent on 22 October 2026. The vote was unanimous.
  • The Bank reported September consumer price inflation at 2.9 percent and core inflation at 2.8 percent.
  • The decision says the Board will still judge the timing of any further increase. It does not publish that path.

The Monetary Policy Board’s decision, published on the Bank’s English site with the registration date 22 October 2026, says the Board left the Base Rate unchanged at 3.00 percent for the intermeeting period. All seven members supported the decision. The Bank’s rate table shows the Base Rate was raised to 3.00 percent on 27 August 2026, from 2.75 percent on 16 July 2026. The decision text refers to assessing the effects of the two prior rate increases.

The same release says September consumer price inflation was 2.9 percent and core inflation, excluding food and energy, was 2.8 percent. It says inflation remains high at around 3 percent, that growth has been led by exports and investment, and that financial-stability risks related to housing in Seoul and the surrounding area and to household debt still need attention. The Board said it would decide the timing and pace of any further increase while watching inflation, the domestic economy and financial stability. A hold, in that wording, is not described as the end of the discussion.

The Bank named the Middle East conflict, monetary and fiscal policy in major economies, and the outlook for investment in artificial intelligence among the uncertainties. It did not publish a path of future rates. Outside forecasts of another increase are not part of this note. The earlier reading on this desk still applies: the statement, the projections and the press conference are different texts. The opening remarks are linked from the same Bank page and are not copied here.

Why it matters for investors and traders

The policy rate is the price of overnight money in the won. Households and firms meet it through loans and deposits later, and not automatically on the afternoon of the decision. What was already expected can matter as much as the hold itself, and this note does not claim to know that expectation.

Markets discussed: Rates, Macro. These are the subjects of the briefing, not a list of markets that moved.

Uncertainties

  • The Bank did not set the date or size of any later increase.
  • September inflation is a past month. October’s figure was not in the release.
  • No Korean bond yield or exchange rate from the Bank is restated as a market move caused by the hold.

What to watch next

  • The Bank pointed to incoming data, including third-quarter GDP and October inflation, as part of what it would assess.
  • Use the Bank’s release rather than a headline that collapses the statement into a single adjective.
