How WiT Markets Verifies and Reports Financial News

Our approach to sourcing, verification, market context, publication dates, editorial independence and corrections.

Financial developments can be complex, fast-moving and easily misunderstood. WiT Markets aims to distinguish what has been established, what has been reported by others, what remains uncertain and why the information matters to financial market participants.

Written by the WiT Markets editorial desk, which is a function, not a named specialist. The review line is “Editorially reviewed”. Last reviewed 13 October 2026. That pass is stored in the page. It is not a live check of every briefing, and it is not a qualified legal review.

Identify, source, verify, explain, publish

Select a stage. The note is the practice behind the briefings already on the site.

Identify

A briefing starts when the desk has a document worth reading: a regulator notice, an official release, a company filing, or a named publisher’s report. The site does not run a continuous wire, and it does not promise to cover every release.

Each stage describes the desk as it works now. There is no separate newsroom, no external fact-checking unit, and no continuous monitoring feed behind these steps.

What we cover

News is the dated briefing. Learn is a standing explanation. Research is the longer argument. A category is only as current as the briefings on its page.

  • News

    Global markets

Cross-asset notes the desk has published, including a dated session and a reading on how a market briefing differs from a live price.

  • News

    Economy and policy

Central-bank decisions, inflation, yields, growth remarks and a government budget, each tied to the document named on the card.

  • News

    Brokers and the financial industry

Regulatory documents the desk has read. A proposal is kept as a proposal. Named provider announcements are a separate record, and none is on file.

  • News

    Exchanges and market infrastructure

Trading venues, clearing, settlement and the notices that describe them. A planned launch stays planned until a later notice says the service is operating.

  • News

    Digital assets

Cryptoasset prices in a named dispatch, and regulatory notes about tokens, platforms and permissions. A price note is not a register check.

  • News

    Market explainers

How one event can show up in more than one market, and where the briefing for that event lives. The page does not forecast a price.

What makes a development worth a briefing?

A company press release does not become news because it was published. The desk writes when a document can carry the claim.

  • Relevance

The development concerns a market, a rule, a venue, or a firm a reader might actually use.

  • A source that can be opened

The desk cites a document it has read. A claim with no document does not become a briefing.

  • Significance

The change has a scope: who it applies to, which product, or which date. A slogan without that scope is thin.

  • Regulatory or economic weight

A consultation, a decision, a statistical release or an infrastructure date can clear this bar. The status is written as the document writes it.

  • Timeliness

The briefing is dated when WiT Markets publishes it. An older document can still be briefed. It is not dressed up as breaking news.

  • Context that can be stated

The note can say what changed and what did not. If that cannot be said from the document, the gap stays in the uncertainties.

  • Room for uncertainty

Pending approvals, missing dates and conflicting accounts are written down. They are not smoothed into one cause.

How we evaluate sources

The order matches the editorial policy. A primary document can still contain a forecast or a sales claim.

Source types used on WiT Markets
Source typeTypical evidenceWhat it can establishImportant limitations
PrimaryThe organisation’s own notice: a central bank, a statistical office, a regulator, a statute or rulebook, an exchange filing, a company report, a clearing house, or a provider’s fee schedule. What that organisation published, on the date the document carries, for the scope the document names. The document can still contain an estimate, a forecast, or a commercial claim. Those sentences stay attributed. Reading it is not a specialist legal opinion.
SecondaryA named news publisher, an institutional research note, or a study, used for context around a primary document. What that publisher reported, including the time it gives for its own dispatch.A secondary account is not a substitute for the register or the fee schedule. Two publishers can describe the same morning differently. The briefing keeps them separate.
Lower confidenceAn unnamed social post, a rumour, a screenshot with no provenance, or a promotion with no schedule behind it.Nothing the desk will publish as a fact. These items stay off the page until a source can be named and read. The site does not run a rumour desk and it does not monitor social media. Silence here means the item was not used, not that every rumour was reviewed.

From a claim to a verified briefing

Three fictional claims. They are teaching examples. They are not WiT Markets articles, and they do not name a real firm or a real rule.

IllustrationNot a published briefing

Original claim

“A trading provider has reduced its fees.”

Evidence needed

  • The legal entity that issued the schedule
  • The official fee schedule, not only the announcement
  • Which products and accounts are inside the change
  • The effective date
  • Geographic limits
  • Conditions and exclusions

What would count as confirmed

Illustration only. If the schedule itself showed a lower commission on named cash-equity accounts at one entity from a stated date, a briefing could say that, and only that.

What remains uncertain

A headline that says “fees are lower” does not say for whom, on which product, or from when. A brand with several companies is not one fee.

Appropriate description

Appropriate description: the named entity’s schedule shows a lower commission on defined accounts from a stated date. The announcement alone supports a narrower line: the provider says it has reduced fees.

Four types of statement

A reader should be able to see which kind of sentence they are looking at.

  • Verified fact

A sentence tied to a document the desk has read. Example: a central bank’s release says it left its policy rate unchanged. The rate in the briefing is that release’s rate.

  • Attributed statement

A sentence that names who said it. Example: a company’s release says a service will launch on a date, pending approvals. Attribution records the claim. It does not, by itself, prove the service is open.

  • Editorial interpretation

A reasoned reading, labelled when the site uses a WiT View. Example: why a shorter settlement cycle leaves less time for allocation. The interpretation is marked off from the date in the statute or the notice.

  • Uncertainty

A gap the document leaves open. Example: an approval that is still pending, a date the paper does not print, or two publishers that do not give the same cause. The gap stays in the note.

How regulation and enforcement are reported

The label follows the document. The regulatory desk is where those briefings live. There is no specialist legal review on this site.

Status labels used when a regulatory document is briefed
StatusHow it is written
ConsultationThe authority is asking for views. The text is not a requirement that has started.
Draft or proposalA text that may change. It is reported as a proposal, with the deadline if one is printed.
Final decisionThe authority has adopted a text. The start date is the date the decision gives, which can be later.
Rule in forceThe requirement has started, on the date the instrument states. The desk uses this label only when the document says so.
GuidanceThe authority’s expectation of how to comply. Guidance is not rewritten as a new statute.
Supervisory statementWhat the authority says firms should do now. It is distinguished from a law that is still being negotiated.
InvestigationAn inquiry. It is not a finding that a firm broke a rule.
AllegationA claim that has been made. It is not a judgment.
Formal action or settlementA measure or a settlement on the terms the notice prints. The terms are not widened to every product or every country.
Judgment and appealA court result is reported from the judgment that was read. An appeal, where one is filed, means a later court has not yet decided.

Broker and regulatory developments

Broker and platform announcements need a document

A provider’s sentence is the provider’s sentence until the schedule, the entity and the date are in view.

  • The contracting legal entity.
  • The licence and the jurisdiction that issued it.
  • The products and customers inside the change.
  • The effective date.
  • The fee schedule or the account terms, not only the announcement.
  • Whether a feature is available now or described as planned.

A permission in one country is that country’s permission. An announcement is not a regulatory approval. Named provider announcements on the news file are still empty, because no provider notice has been entered as that record.

What our dates mean

The dates on a briefing are not interchangeable. None of them is a clock time, because no publication time was recorded.

Date labels on WiT Markets news
LabelWhat it recordsWhat it does not record
Event dateThe day the document says the decision, the release, or the deadline falls. It is not the day WiT Markets published the briefing.
Source publication dateThe date printed on the notice, the release, or the dispatch. It is not the page’s last-reviewed date.
WiT Markets publication dateThe day the briefing was entered. New notes in this file use 22 October 2026. Older reading notes stay on 1 October 2026.A briefing is not backdated to the source.
Last updatedThe site does not keep a separate update clock. A substantive change is a change to the briefing text. A redesign does not move the review date.A deploy is not an update of the story.
Last reviewedAn editorial pass stored in the page. This methodology page was last reviewed on 13 October 2026. The policy target for another pass is six months later. It is not the time the site was built, and it is not a live check of every source.
Source checkedThe lastChecked date on that source record, the day the document was read.It is not a claim that the organisation was watched after that day.

How corrections and changes are handled

The corrections page is the record of the path. It does not list past corrections, because none has been recorded.

  1. A reader or the desk flags the page. The useful report names the page and the source.
  2. The report is read against that source. A message is not accepted as true because it arrived.
  3. The change is classed. A wording tidy that leaves the claim intact is not written up as a correction. A material change would alter a fee, an entity, a permission, a number, or the meaning of a source.
  4. The page is changed. The correction belongs on the page it affects. The review date moves when that pass is real.
  5. The public log stays empty until a correction exists. The site will not invent a history of fixes, and it has no separate retraction register.

How a correction is handled

A market reaction is rarely one cause

The teaching chain below is a way to read a day. It is not a live path and it is not a forecast.

  1. A central bank publishes a decision.
  2. Markets may already have had a view of that decision.
  3. Bond yields can move on the difference between the decision and that view.
  4. A currency and a share index can move in the same hour for that reason, or for another reason sitting in the same dispatch.

The 22 October 2026 session notes keep two oil explanations apart, because Reuters and the Associated Press did not give the same account. A price in those notes is the publisher’s figure at the time the publisher names. Liquidity, positioning and other news can sit beside a statistic. The desk does not promote a timed coincidence into a cause.

How one event can affect different markets

News, research and learn

Three shelves. A news briefing is not republished as a ranking or as a lesson.

  • News

    What happened

What the document says, when it was published, who said it, and why the scope matters.

  • Research

    A longer argument

Markets, instruments and structures, with the note’s own date and method.

  • Learn

    A standing idea

How an order, a margin call or a settlement cycle works, without being tied to one day’s headline.

Editorial pages and commercial relationships

The commercial disclosure is the record. This page does not add a relationship the disclosure does not list.

No provider record is marked as an active commercial relationship. Affiliate destinations are empty, and no provider call-to-action is an affiliate link. A link to a firm’s own site is labelled as the firm’s site.

Compensation must not decide a factual comparison field, an editorial conclusion, or whether a firm is included. If a relationship is switched on later, it will be recorded against the provider and on the disclosure page, and kept away from fees, regulation and availability. While any relationship is active, that page will not claim independence.

Commercial disclosure

How drafting software is used

This is the limit stated in the editorial policy. There is no separate automated newsroom.

Drafting software may be used to structure a page and to check that wording stays consistent. It is not a source. A fee, a permission, a price or a legal outcome still needs a document a person can open. Unconfirmed cells stay unconfirmed. Software is not listed as an author. The site does not publish an automated wire, and it does not claim that every sentence was re-checked by a second organisation.

Limits of this coverage

  • The news file is a set of briefings, not a live wire.
  • Coverage is the documents the desk has entered. It is not every event in a market.
  • The publication date is not the event time.
  • An explanation of a move is not a forecast.
  • A regulator’s notice applies to the firms and products it names.
  • Investor protection follows the contracting legal entity.
  • Naming a source is not the same thing as re-measuring the source’s figure.
  • A briefing is general information. It is not a personal recommendation.

How a briefing can show its sources

Select a field. The sample is fictional, so it does not point at a real notice or borrow an official seal.

FictionalNo real notice and no regulator seal

Headline

Regulator opens a consultation on a shorter settlement cycle for listed shares

The headline matches the document’s status. It says a consultation has opened. It does not say the cycle has changed.

Help us correct the record

Name the page and the source. The site does not promise a reply within a set number of days.

  • Corrections

The path a report takes, and why the log is empty.

  • Report an error

The contact page takes the report. A message is delivered by the site only when mail delivery is configured. Otherwise it opens your email application and is not stored here.

Questions readers ask

How does WiT Markets choose which financial news to cover?

A briefing is written when the desk has a document it has read and the claim can be tied to that document. There is no live wire and no promise to cover every release. A company announcement does not become a briefing merely because it was issued.

What sources does WiT Markets use?

The strongest source available, in the order set out in the editorial policy: a regulator’s register or rulebook, a government or tax authority, an exchange, central bank or other official institution, the provider’s own legal or fee document, then institutional research. A named news report can supply context and is attributed. Affiliate sites, anonymous blogs, forums and unsourced aggregators are not used for a fee, a permission or a country row.

Does a primary source guarantee a claim is true?

No. A primary source shows what that organisation published. It can contain an estimate, a forecast or a commercial claim. Those parts stay attributed to the organisation.

How are broker announcements verified?

A fee or permission claim needs the provider’s own document, the legal entity, the products and the date. Named provider announcements are a separate record, and none is on file. A brand that is permitted in one jurisdiction is not described as regulated everywhere.

How are regulatory consultations reported?

A consultation, a proposal and a call for evidence are labelled as such. They are not written as rules that have started. The deadline is included when the document prints one.

Does WiT Markets provide live financial news?

No. The publication date is the day the briefing was entered. It is not the minute of the event, and the site does not present itself as a live tape.

What is the difference between publication and review dates?

The publication date is when the briefing was entered. The source date is the date on the document. Last reviewed is an editorial pass stored in the page. On this methodology page that pass is 13 October 2026. A source-checked date is the day that particular document was read. These are different events.

How does WiT Markets distinguish fact from interpretation?

A fact is tied to a document. An attributed statement names who said it. A WiT View is a labelled interpretation. An open question stays in the uncertainties. Interpretation is not a place to hide a figure the desk could not find.

How are corrections handled?

No correction has been recorded, so there is no public log. A report is read against the page and the source the reader cites. A material factual change is made on the page it affects. A wording tidy that does not change the claim is not written up as a correction. A disagreement with a labelled WiT View is not, by itself, a correction.

Does WiT Markets use automated tools?

Drafting software may be used to structure pages and to check consistency. It is not a source, and it is not listed as an author. Facts still need a document a person can read. The site does not run an automated news wire.

How are commercial relationships disclosed?

No commercial relationship is recorded as active. Compensation must not decide a factual field, an editorial conclusion, or whether a firm is included. If a relationship is added later, it will be recorded on the commercial disclosure page. While any relationship is active, that page will not claim independence.

How can readers report an error?

Use the contact route for an editorial correction, and include the page address and the source that shows the correction. The form appears when this deployment has a delivery destination. The corrections page describes the path. The site does not promise a review within a set number of days.
