A market theme is a hypothesis about demand
A theme names a slow change in how the economy spends or produces. It becomes an investment only when you can say which cash flows, which instruments and which risks express it. The theme itself is not a holding.
Key points
- A theme needs a demand driver, a set of possible beneficiaries and a way to be wrong.
- Valuation and business risk still apply. A large structural story can be attached to an expensive, fragile company.
- WiT Markets has not published a priced thematic report. This note is the standard for reading one.
What is going on
Themes that recur in public discussion include spending on computing infrastructure, semiconductors, a change in the energy mix, investment in electricity networks, demand for industrial metals, the rearrangement of supply chains, ageing and labour force growth, healthcare technology, and the digitisation of payments. Each can be described without a share price. The description should say who pays, who gets paid, and which public statistics would show that the spending is happening.
Why it matters
Beneficiaries are not the slogan. A company, a commodity, a fund or a bond can sit at different points in the same story. Some gain if the spending arrives. Some gain only if they keep a margin after the spending arrives. Some lose if a regulator, a customer or a competing technology takes the margin away. Instruments matter: a miner, a metal future and a thematic fund are three exposures.
What to watch
Write a base path, a path where the spending is larger, and a path where it is delayed or captured by someone else. State the assumption. Do not put a probability on it unless you have a method you are willing to show. Read the valuation on any listed beneficiary as a separate question. A true story and a poor price can coexist.
Risks
Themes last longer in slides than in profits. Policy can redirect a subsidy. A supply response can cut the price of the scarce input the theme was built on. This page does not claim that any named theme is investable, cheap, or supported by a fresh dataset on the day you read it.
