A winning industry can still disappoint the shareholder

The point of this section is that a structural trend is not an entry price. Copper can be scarce in an IEA scenario, and AI spending can support GDP, while the listed claim on either story fails to earn its cost of capital. This note gathers that distinction and refuses a ranking of themes.

Key points

  • Demand, revenue, profit and the shareholder's return are four different accounts.
  • The IEA's projected 2035 copper deficit of 25 percent does not state a miner's return. The OECD's warning is that AI spending may not earn the profits the spending seems to imply.
  • A worksheet below uses a 6 percent return on capital against a 9 percent required return. It is hypothetical. It is not a company.

What is going on

Two official sentences set the problem. The IEA projects a copper supply deficit of 25 percent in 2035, narrower than the prior outlook's roughly 30 percent, while spending by copper-focused companies rose 8 percent in 2025. Scarcity and investment are both in the document, and neither is a total-return series. The OECD says AI-related investment has supported activity and that a risk is returns falling short of the earnings implied by spending plans. The IMF lists a reassessment of AI expectations beside an upside of stronger productivity. Investors who already paid for the upside are exposed to the reassessment even if the technology works.

Why it matters

Capital intensity means the growth absorbs cash. A business can report higher revenue and still earn 6 percent on the new capital when investors require 9 percent. This worksheet is hypothetical. It is not a miner, a chip firm or a utility, and it is not a forecast. The gap of 3 percentage points is the value destroyed each year on the new capital, before any change in the multiple. If the shares were bought at a price that assumed the required 9 percent would be earned, the disappointment is in the entry price, not in the existence of demand. Dilution makes it worse: equity issued to fund the build splits the same profit across more shares. The equity-multiple note on this site is the companion for that accounting.

What to watch

Crowding shows up as a valuation that requires the good path, and as index concentration when a few winners become the market. The concentration note explains the index arithmetic without a live weight. Cyclicality shows up when the spending pauses and the capacity remains. The battery-metal note is the recent pattern: prices recovered and investment was cut in the same report. Indicators that would challenge a cheerful theme are cuts to capital-expenditure plans, margins that fall as new entrants arrive, and official statistics that do not show the productivity the valuation requires.

Risks

A sceptical note can be early. Demand can outrun supply for long enough that even an expensive entry works for a while. Policy can socialise the cost and leave the owner with a better return than the ungarnished project deserved. Those possibilities do not restore a rule that the important industry is the good investment. This desk does not rank the themes on this hub, and it does not publish a basket.

What to separate in any theme

Write the demand driver, the evidence, the step in the chain that receives the spending, the firm or contract that might keep a margin, the instrument you would actually hold, and the fact that would make you drop the mapping. Valuation is the last of these, not a footnote. A true story and a poor price can coexist. The original method note on this hub said that before these editions were added. It still governs them.
