Quotes and depth can be a subscription, not a free part of the account
A commission schedule does not include the right to see every quote. Exchanges license real-time prices and depth. A platform can pass that fee on, bundle a subset, or show a delayed price.
Key points
- Market data is a licence. It is not the same line as commission.
- A delayed or derived price is not the venue’s live book.
- This note does not reprint a current data fee.
What is going on
Venues such as CME Group sell market data under their own agreements. Professional and non-professional classifications can change the price. Depth, implied prices and some indices are separate entitlements. A broker may include a basic quote and charge for the rest, or charge a platform fee that is really a data fee. The SEC’s work on market data in equity markets is a different regime from a derivatives venue. The category of charge is the point, not a number copied from memory.
Why it matters
A trader who needs depth can pay more per month than the commission on a small account. A trader who uses a delayed price can think a market is tradable at a figure the venue has already left.
What to watch
Ask which feeds are included, which are extra, whether the price is real-time or delayed, and whether the classification of the user changes the bill.
Risks
Entitlements change, and a fee paid to a vendor is not a fee paid to the venue unless the schedule says so. No current price list is reprinted here.
