Stocks and shares

Buying a listed share means taking a place in the queue behind lenders, suppliers and tax authorities, and ahead of nobody. The reward for being last in that queue is the residual profit, if it exists.

Claims on the company

Shares may pay dividends, or the company may reinvest the cash. Neither choice is a moral good. A dividend is not extra return if the share price drops by the same cash on the ex-dividend date, though tax and the use of the cash can make the paths differ afterwards.

Price and the business

The market price is a trade, not the output of a formula you are owed. Reports, competitive position and the balance sheet are how you decide whether you want the claim. A chart can tell you how others have been trading. It cannot tell you what the claim is worth to you.

Holding foreign shares

A US share in a UK, Finnish or Australian account brings a currency, a withholding tax on dividends, and a custodian chain. Those are not details for later. They are the investment. Country guides on this site explain the account types. They do not tell you which company to buy.
