Brent crude oil trading: the seaborne benchmark
Brent is a seaborne crude benchmark used widely in cargo pricing. It is not WTI and not a generic oil price. Freight, regional crudes and the futures settlement terms sit between the headline and a particular barrel.

Market overview
ICE lists Brent futures. The settlement method and the barrel definition are on ICE’s contract page. This site does not copy those fields from memory.
Many physical crudes are priced as Brent plus or minus a differential. The differential is the market for that grade and location. A Brent future does not remove it.
What tends to move it
Seaborne balances
Cargo flows and freight matter more than an inland US hub.
Other crudes
Differentials move even when the Brent flat price does not.
Refining demand
Runs and margins pull crude through the system.
Futures expiry
The financial contract still has a calendar.
Ways to take the exposure
These are different legal positions. A platform may offer one and not the others. Nothing here is available in every country.
Brent futures
The listed international benchmark contract. Read ICE for the current terms.
Funds
May hold Brent, WTI or a mix. The name on the fund is not enough.
CFDs
A firm’s Brent price, where the firm lists Brent rather than oil.
Producer shares
A company exposed to several crudes and to its own costs.
Contract specifications

What the costs usually are
Exchange fees and commission on the future, or spread and financing on a CFD. A fund adds the roll and its charge. Currency conversion applies if your account is not in the contract’s currency.
What a headline commission leaves out of the bill separates the commission from the spread, financing and other charges.
Risks that belong to this market
Wrong benchmark
A WTI move is not automatically a Brent move.
Differentials
The grade you care about may not be the futures grade.
Roll
Extending a long futures position has a cost or a credit depending on the curve.

OpenFlat price and differential
Brent’s flat price is the benchmark. A West African or Middle Eastern cargo is often that benchmark plus a premium or a discount. Trading the flat price and trading the differential are different decisions.

Questions
Why can Brent and WTI diverge?
Transport, storage and the location of the crude can bottle up one benchmark while the other clears by sea.
Does an oil CFD mean Brent?
Not unless the contract says so. Unspecified oil is labelled that way on this page.
