Cocoa trading: West African supply and futures volatility
Cocoa is a soft commodity with production concentrated in West Africa. Weather and crop disease there are global supply events. The futures market is smaller than the grains, and it can move in extremes.

Market overview
Beans are grown, fermented and shipped. Grinders turn them into liquor, butter and powder. The futures contract standardises deliverable cocoa. It is not a chocolate company’s margin.
Because origins are few, a regional crop problem is the balance. Certified stocks show deliverable inventory and not every warehouse at origin. ICE publishes the contract. This page does not copy its size or tick.
What tends to move it
West African weather and disease
The crop is geographically narrow.
Grinding demand
Processors’ orders, not a consumer headline alone.
Certified stocks
Visible deliverable inventory.
Liquidity
A small futures book amplifies the move.
Ways to take the exposure
These are different legal positions. A platform may offer one and not the others. Nothing here is available in every country.
Cocoa futures
The listed contract. Expiry and delivery rules matter.
Processor shares
A grinding or chocolate business. Brand and costs dominate.
CFDs
Unconfirmed unless a directory note names cocoa.

What the costs usually are
In a fast market the spread and slippage can dwarf the commission. That is an implicit cost. It is not a published tariff.
What a headline commission leaves out of the bill separates the commission from the spread, financing and other charges.
Risks that belong to this market
Extreme moves
Cocoa futures have travelled far enough that leverage becomes the whole risk.
Concentration
One region’s crop is the supply story.
Exit
A thin book can skip the price on the screen.

How spread, fees and financing sit beside a headline commission.
OpenConcentration plus leverage
A weather or disease problem in a dominant origin does not have a deep bench of alternative suppliers. The futures market then has to reprice a real shortage in a contract that is not especially deep. Leverage on top of that is a different decision from holding a chocolate company’s shares.
No price history is drawn on this page, because a chart without a sourced series would be decorative.
Questions
Why is cocoa described as concentrated?
A small number of West African origins dominate production. A local crop problem is a global supply problem.
Is a chocolate share a cocoa future?
No. The company has brands, costs and other inputs.
