Coffee trading: arabica, robusta and origin risk

Coffee is two commercial species. Arabica and robusta grow in different places, taste different and are listed on different futures contracts. Weather, disease and currency in producing countries move them. They are not one soft commodity with two names.

Market overview

ICE lists coffee contracts. Arabica and robusta have different sizes and different delivery rules. Those figures are not copied here.

Certified exchange stocks are visible inventory of deliverable coffee. They are not every bag in a warehouse at origin. Disease and a frost in a growing region can matter more than a demand headline.

What tends to move it

Origin weather

Frost, drought and rain at the wrong time.

Disease

Crop disease is a supply event.

Currency

Many origins sell in dollars and spend in a local currency.

Certified stocks

Deliverable inventory, not world inventory.

Ways to take the exposure

These are different legal positions. A platform may offer one and not the others. Nothing here is available in every country.

Arabica futures

One ICE contract.

Robusta futures

Another ICE contract. Not a substitute without basis.

Roaster shares

A brand and a margin, not a bag of green coffee.

Contract specifications

Contract unit, tick and margin are on the exchange page. They are not reprinted here.

Illustrative contract value

Enter the exchange’s price unit, contract size and tick value yourself. Nothing here is a live quote or a margin rate. The arithmetic is valid only when the price and the contract size use the units in that specification. If the contract quotes in cents or in an index, enter the price in that quote unit.

What the costs usually are

Futures fees and a spread that can widen when origin news hits an otherwise quiet contract. A CFD, if offered, is a different charging model.

What a headline commission leaves out of the bill separates the commission from the spread, financing and other charges.

Risks that belong to this market

Species basis

Arabica and robusta diverge.

Concentration

A few origins dominate each species.

Liquidity

Softs are quieter than a major grain until they are not.

Providers in the commodities directory

The rows come from the existing commodities research note. No second provider list was created. No commercial relationship is recorded on these rows, so the button goes to the firm’s own site. This is not a ranking.

No provider is marked as confirmed for this commodity. A named row means the existing research note uses the commodity’s name. An oil row means the note says oil or crude without saying WTI or Brent. A group row means the firm was filed under the category only. Regions are mentions in that note, not a check that you can open an account.

Two species

A frost in an arabica region does not automatically reprice robusta one for one. The contracts, the growing zones and the buyers differ. A product that says coffee without the species has skipped the specification.

No crop estimate is printed on this page.

Questions

Are arabica and robusta the same futures contract?

No. They are different listings.

Do certified stocks equal world supply?

No. They are coffee tenderable on that exchange.
