Commodity category

Agriculture: grains, oilseeds and soft commodities

Agricultural markets add a growing season to the usual inventory story. Wheat, corn and soybeans are grains and oilseeds with crop reports and harvest months. Coffee, sugar and cocoa are soft commodities with different origins, different exchanges and, often, thinner liquidity.

Market overview

Grains and oilseeds are tied to planting, weather and official crop reports. Old-crop and new-crop months are different contracts. Soybeans also split into meal and oil, which are separate markets from the bean.

Softs are more concentrated in origin. Coffee splits into arabica and robusta. Sugar splits into raw and white, with ethanol policy in the background. Cocoa supply is concentrated in West Africa, which is why a regional crop problem can move the futures price sharply.

What tends to move it

Weather and biology

A season, a frost or a disease can reprice a contract.

Crop reports

Official estimates move expectations. They are revised.

Trade policy

Export bans and tariffs change who can ship.

Contract grade

The futures grade is not every grade a mill or a roaster buys.

Ways to take the exposure

These are different legal positions. A platform may offer one and not the others. Nothing here is available in every country.

Futures

The usual listed route. Month, grade and exchange are the product.

Funds

Fewer unleveraged vehicles than in gold. Read whether the fund rolls futures.

Producer and processor shares

A farm business, a mill or a food company. Not the crop.

CFDs

Offered on some names by some firms. Still a contract with that firm.

Contract specifications

CME Group

CBOT lists major grain and oilseed contracts. Specifications stay on the exchange page.

Read the exchange page

ICE

ICE lists coffee, sugar and cocoa contracts. Arabica and robusta are not one contract.

Illustrative contract value

Enter the exchange’s price unit, contract size and tick value yourself. Nothing here is a live quote or a margin rate. The arithmetic is valid only when the price and the contract size use the units in that specification. If the contract quotes in cents or in an index, enter the price in that quote unit.

What the costs usually are

Futures commission and exchange fees are the explicit charges. The roll, the bid-offer and a possible delivery cost are the rest. A fund adds its own charge.

What a headline commission leaves out of the bill separates the commission from the spread, financing and other charges.

Risks that belong to this market

Seasonality

The contract you hold may be the old crop or the new one.

Concentration

Cocoa and some coffee origins are narrow. A regional shock is the market.

Liquidity

Softs can be quieter than a grain benchmark. Size accordingly.

Compare agriculture providers

The list is the commodities research workbook’s assignment for this group. A firm appears here only when that workbook places it in agriculture. A group assignment is not proof that every market in the group is offered. Firms with no group in the workbook are left out. The order is alphabetical. It is not a ranking, and no commercial relationship is recorded on these rows.

Narrow the list

These controls match fields in the research extract. They are not a recommendation, and a match is not permission to open an account.

9 of 9 providers assigned to Agriculture in the research workbook. Order is alphabetical. A region filter means the research note mentions that region. It does not confirm you can open an account there.

Two calendars

Grains follow a planting and harvest year, and official statistics are part of the information set. Softs follow tree crops and cane, with different diseases, different ports and different contract rules.

The six product pages keep those calendars apart. They do not publish a crop forecast or a price.

Questions

Are wheat futures one market?

No. Exchanges list different wheats and different delivery points. The grade is part of the contract.

Is coffee one bean?

Arabica and robusta are different species, usually listed on different contracts.
