Corn trading: feed, ethanol and the harvest calendar

Corn is feed, food and fuel. Ethanol policy and livestock demand sit beside the weather. Futures months map onto a planting and harvest year, so the old crop and the new crop are different contracts.

Market overview

A large share of US corn goes to animal feed and to ethanol. A change in fuel policy or in the herd is a demand change. Weather during pollination is a supply change. They are not the same shock.

Official crop reports move expectations and are revised. This page does not republish a production figure.

What tends to move it

Weather

Planting, pollination and harvest windows.

Ethanol

Fuel policy links corn to energy.

Feed demand

Livestock cycles.

The report calendar

Scheduled official estimates, then revisions.

Ways to take the exposure

These are different legal positions. A platform may offer one and not the others. Nothing here is available in every country.

Corn futures

A CBOT contract. Month and size are on the CME page.

Related grain spreads

Corn, wheat and soybeans are linked and not substitutes in a contract sense.

Agribusiness shares

A company exposed to handling and processing.

Contract specifications

Contract unit, tick and margin are on the exchange page. They are not reprinted here.

Illustrative contract value

Enter the exchange’s price unit, contract size and tick value yourself. Nothing here is a live quote or a margin rate. The arithmetic is valid only when the price and the contract size use the units in that specification. If the contract quotes in cents or in an index, enter the price in that quote unit.

What the costs usually are

Commission, exchange fees and the bid-offer. Spreads between months have their own liquidity.

What a headline commission leaves out of the bill separates the commission from the spread, financing and other charges.

Risks that belong to this market

Weather windows

A short period in the growing season can dominate the year.

Policy

Ethanol mandates are political decisions.

Month choice

Hedging new crop with old crop is a different risk.

Providers in the commodities directory

The rows come from the existing commodities research note. No second provider list was created. No commercial relationship is recorded on these rows, so the button goes to the firm’s own site. This is not a ranking.

No provider is marked as confirmed for this commodity. A named row means the existing research note uses the commodity’s name. An oil row means the note says oil or crude without saying WTI or Brent. A group row means the firm was filed under the category only. Regions are mentions in that note, not a check that you can open an account.

Three demands, one futures curve

Feed, ethanol and export can pull on the same crop. A rally that comes from a fuel-policy headline is not the same event as a drought. The futures month tells you which harvest you are discussing.

No yield forecast is published here.

Questions

Is corn only a food commodity?

No. Feed and ethanol are large uses in the United States.

What is the difference between contract months?

They are different delivery periods, often different harvests.
