How to read a macro path without turning it into a trade

Market outlooks fail when they treat the next data print as a verdict. This note sets out a way to read growth, inflation and policy as a path, using public institutions as the source of the numbers and refusing a point forecast.

What is going on

Investors receive a stream of official releases: inflation, labour markets, business surveys and central-bank decisions. Each print is noisy. Revisions are normal. The useful question is whether the path of demand and the path of inflation are still consistent with the policy the central bank says it is running. A single surprise does not answer that.

Why it matters

Asset prices already contain a path. Bonds contain an expected policy rate. Equities contain a claim on profits that depends on that path and on how much investors will pay for it. If your only reaction to a release is to look at the index future, you are watching the argument, not joining the evidence. IMF and BIS publications are slower than a headline and better as a map of the world economy than a broker note written to explain yesterday.

What to watch

Watch the parts of inflation that policy can influence, the parts that are tax and energy, and whether growth is broadening or narrowing to a few sectors. Watch revisions. A method that cannot survive a revision was fitting a headline.

Risks

This framework will be late. It will also be wrong when a shock is genuinely new. It is not a model with a number at the end. Anyone selling a precise year-end index level is offering confidence, not evidence.
